The Ophthalmology Foundation presented the “Ophthalmic Educators Train the Trainers (TTT)” on Wednesday, 21 August 2024 at the College of Ophthalmology of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (COECSA) Congress. The goal of the workshop was to improve ophthalmic educators teaching and assessing abilities with resultant improvement in resident education. This follows up on the OF 2023 workshop, and another is planned next year to create a continuity of interaction/training improvement
The workshop objectives for participants were:
- Discuss the rationale for workplace-based assessments (WPBA)
- Implement WPBA relevant to the COECSA Curriculum
- Describe Peyton’s 4 step approach to teaching clinical/procedural skills
Teachers of varying levels of seniority were present and the discussion was lively. The participants were from a variety of countries including Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, Somaliland, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, and the DRC. Discussion was enthusiastic and participation was excellent.
Participant’s survey results following the workshop emphasize enhancing teaching practices through improved feedback mechanisms, structured assessment tools, and the development of engaging educational content. Participants show a commitment to continuous improvement in training setups, curriculum development, and the use of technology in education, reflecting a dedication to ongoing professional development, and creating a supportive learning environment for both faculty members and residents.
We thank The Jireh Foundation for supporting this COECSA workshop.
