Ophthalmology Foundation Launches International Ophthalmology Examinations to Improve Global Eye Care

The Ophthalmology Foundation (OF) is launching a groundbreaking initiative to ensure that ophthalmologists in training meet the highest standards of knowledge and skills. The nonprofit, focused on advancing eye care in low-resource and underserved regions, is developing new online, standardized international ophthalmology examinations aimed at improving the quality of ophthalmic education and, ultimately, global eye care.

Ophthalmologists play a vital role in diagnosing and treating eye diseases, as well as identifying other systemic conditions. To prepare them for these challenges, the OF exams will align with the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Basic and Clinical Sciences (BCSC) standards. The exams will cover essential topics, including Visual Sciences, Optics, Refraction, Instruments, and Clinical Ophthalmology.

Endorsed by Leading Institutions: The exams are proudly endorsed by Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, one of the oldest and most prestigious eye hospitals in the world. Their endorsement underscores the global relevance of these examinations. As we continue to grow, we are dedicated to forming additional partnerships with leading organizations in ophthalmology, further enhancing the strength and reach of these exams. We will keep you updated on any new developments as we progress.

Key Benefits:

  • Flexible online format allowing you to take exams from anywhere.
  • Comprehensive curriculum covering essential ophthalmology knowledge.
  • Recognized certification to enhance your professional credentials.
  • Continuous support and resources from the OF community.
  • Successfully passing the Ophthalmology Foundation Examinations will earn you valuable points towards your application for International Ophthalmological Fellowship Foundation (IOFF e.V.) application
  • Candidates who pass all three of the OF Examinations will be awarded the post nominal, FIOF (Fellow of the International Ophthalmology Foundation).
  • Exemption policy for examinations deemed to be of the same standard by the OF Board

“This initiative is a major step in enhancing ophthalmic education, particularly in underserved areas,” said Jim Mazzo, President of the OF’s Board of Directors. “We’re committed to strengthening the field and ensuring accountability.”
