Faculty Education

Person speaking at 38th APAO Congress

Education is at the center of what we do. From mentorships to asynchronous online courses, and symposia at supranational meetings, educating is our primary purpose.

We recruit individual ophthalmic educators as content experts who promote developing symposiums, workshops, courses, and other teaching interventions. We also offer online activities to support and extend the depth and reach of the face to face activities.

Education Committee

The Education Committee is a group of volunteer ophthalmic educators who are appointed by the Board of Directors and tasked with the development and execution of all education programs offered by the Ophthalmology Foundation. The original members were long-standing colleagues and collaborators, having worked together on ophthalmic education initiatives throughout their esteemed careers. Each is recognized and respected by peers around the globe as a leader in ophthalmic education, many either currently or previously holding leadership roles in their respective national or supranational societies among other organizations.

Our Education Committee members lead subcommittees that tackle individual programs and help recruit additional volunteer educators to work with the Ophthalmology Foundation to fulfill its mission. Through these programs and collaborations, the committee increased its members in 2023 to include four new passionate educators who bring excellent new perspectives with them and a newfound energy to help expand our current programs.

The goal of the Education Committee is to continue the advancement of best practices in teaching ophthalmologists by developing skills that influence future generations of eye care health professionals.

Karl Golnik, MD, MEd

Committee Chairperson

Over the past 15 years, Karl has become the face of the effort to help improve ophthalmic educator competencies internationally, putting the focus on training the teachers in how to teach rather than simply presenting clinical content. Karl spent almost a decade as the Education Director at the International Council of Ophthalmology, has published more than 150 articles and book chapters in the field of neuro-ophthalmology and medical education, given invited lectures in more than 75 countries, and received multiple awards for his contribution to medical education and the field of ophthalmology. We are gratified that he wanted to be a founding member of the Board of the Ophthalmology Foundation as well as taking on the duties of Chairperson of the Education Committee.

Ophthalmology Foundation Education Consortium

Even with great leadership and a global perspective, we cannot facilitate our programs alone. The Ophthalmology Foundation Education Consortium (OFEC) was created as a partnership between the Ophthalmology Foundation, individual educators, national and supranational societies, and industry partners. OFEC provides ophthalmic educators around the world with the educational tools, techniques, and resources required to optimally train ophthalmologists and improve their skills and the eye care their patients receive.

OFEC targets ophthalmic educators with a variety of faculty development programs. We recruit individual ophthalmic educators as content experts who promote developing symposiums, workshops, courses, and other teaching interventions. We also offer online activities to support and extend the depth and reach of otherwise face to face activities. Our society partners help us promote programs within their membership, suggest volunteers, as well as help us with physical logistics when serving as a regional host for in-person events.

For more information on how to get involved with the OFEC and join us in our efforts to provide continuing education in the arena of ophthalmic education, please contact us.

Advisory Committee

Because the primary mission of the Ophthalmology Foundation is to provide programs for underserved and low-resource countries, we rely on an Advisory Committee of respected ophthalmologists from around the world to provide input on our programs. As experienced educators in their own countries, they provide us perspective on whether our materials suit the needs of their region, ensuring our programs truly have a global reach.

We appreciate the contributions of time and expertise from everyone on our Advisory Committee:
