Educator’s Certificates

The Ophthalmology Foundation’s (OF) Educator’s Certificates are for certified eye care professionals to demonstrate their advancement of teaching skills to become an effective educator. The first certificate, the Educator’s Certificate of Completion, is a completion of core teaching modules. This is a prerequisite for the Educator’s Certificate of Teaching Competence where participants must submit assessments of teaching or supervisor letter of recommendations and participate in three categories of ophthalmic education activities such as publications, presentations, and other medical education activities. Educator’s Certificate of Completion

The purpose of this certificate is to document that one has completed basic course work designed to advance their teaching skills and become an effective educator. This certificate is a prerequisite for the OF Educator’s Certificate of Teaching Competence described below.

Prerequisite Criteria:
1. Completion of these seven core OF Teaching Skill Series (TSS) modules:
Module 1: Applying Adult Learning Principles
Module 2: Giving Effective Feedback
Module 3: Assessment Drives Learning
Module 4: Teaching & Assessing in the Clinic
Module 5: Teaching and Assessing in the Operating Room
Module 6: Tips to Enhance Your Lectures
Module 10: Professionalism and Communication Skills
and
2. Completion of at least five of the other TSS modules.

Educator’s Certificate of Teaching Competence

Applicants must:

  1. Be a certified eye care professional.
  2. Have at least five Student or Peer assessments of teaching or supervisor letter of recommendations regarding teaching skills (see Maastricht Teaching Assessment Tool as one example. Other forms will be considered).
  3. Complete the OF Educator’s Certificate of Completion prerequisite criteria above.
  4. Obtain greater or equal to 25 points by participating in ophthalmic education activities described below. Points should be earned in at least three of these categories:
    • MEd or PhD in education (20 points)
    • Publication of medical education peer reviewed journal article (10 points per publication)
    • Publication of medical education non-peer reviewed material (6 points per publication)
    • Presentations/posters in medical education at medical meetings (4 points per activity)
    • Creation of online education modules (4 points per module)
    • Attendance at medical education conferences (2 points per hour)
    • Completion of medical education courses, modules (2 points per course)

The Educator’s Certificate of Teaching Competence administrative fee (US Dollars) is due at the time of application and based on the income ranking of the economy by the World Bank of the applicant’s country of origin. After submitting the application below, you will be prompted to pay your administrative fee. Determine your fee by searching for your country of origin and the corresponding Tier it falls under.
Tier 1: $25 USD
Tier 2: $50 USD
Tier 3: $75 USD
Tier 4: $100 USD

Educator’s Certificate Benefits

  • Listed as “OF Educator” on the Ophthalmology Foundation website, receive the OF Educator Pin, and a certificate of membership.
  • Eligible to participate as OF faculty for in-person and online teaching interventions.
  • Verification of your teaching skills if required by your institution.

Application Process

The applicant will submit below their CV, items from the Educator’s Certificate of Teaching Competence section below that meets the criteria, and an administrative fee based on country of origin and World Bank data. The information will be reviewed and a short Zoom call conducted.
