The Ophthalmology Foundation Welcomes Four Distinguished Leaders to Its Board of Directors
San Francisco, Calif. – The Ophthalmology Foundation (OF) is pleased to announce the election of four new Board of Directors members: Gloria Esigbemi Patrick-Ferife, MBBS, MSc, FNMCOphth; Erin Schallhorn Powers, MBA; Kelly Giuffrida, MBA; and Muhammad Moin, MBBS, BSc, FRCS (Edinburgh), MRCOphth, FRCOphth. Collectively, these internationally recognized leaders bring extensive clinical, academic, research, and policy expertise that will further advance the Foundation’s mission to improve ophthalmic education and eye care worldwide.
The officers continue to serve in their roles: Mr. Jim Mazzo as President, Mr. David Pyott as Vice President, Dr. Bruce Spivey as Vice President and OF representative to the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, Dr. Peter McDonnell as Vice President, and Dr. Julia Haller as Vice President.
Gloria Esigbemi Patrick-Ferife, (MBBS, MSc, FNMCOphth.), is the Co-Founder and Project Director of the Eye Care Health Initiative, established in 2004, and President of the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria (OSN). As a Clinical/Public Health Ophthalmologist and Health System Manager, she has extensive experience in clinical practice, resource management, medical services, and rural health care program management. She also possesses deep expertise in eye care programs, training in hard-to-reach areas in the Niger Delta region, healthcare financing, and project/program monitoring. Her career interests include designing and implementing health policies and strategies; health system management; health care financing; medical waste management; primary health care, including eye care; environmental, eye health, child health, and maternal care policies; and the mainstreaming of eye health.
Erin Schallhorn Powers is a senior executive with over 20 years of experience in strategy, sales, marketing, and the medical field. She has a proven record of achieving business objectives in both commercial and clinical departments, with expertise in the medical device and pharmaceutical sectors. Her distinguished career includes executive leadership roles with global brands, such as her current position as President, Surgical Vision North America at Johnson & Johnson, and previous roles as Vice President, Global Marketing & Product Strategy at BVI Medical, and Vice President, Medical Affairs & Professional Education at CARL ZEISS MEDITEC.
Kelly Giuffrida, MBA currently serves as a Vice President of AbbVie Eye Care, where she leads the US Buy & Bill, Retail, and OTC businesses. She also drives commercial pipeline initiatives across Glaucoma, Retina, and Ocular Surface Disease. Over the course of her career, Kelly has held Commercial Sales and Marketing roles across Eye Care and other therapeutic areas, including CNS, Immunology, and Infectious Disease.
Muhammad Moin, MBBS, BSc, FRCS (Edinburgh), MRCOphth, FRCOphth, currently serves as Pro-Vice Chancellor, KEMU Principal College of Ophthalmology & Allied Vision Sciences, Dean of Surgery & Allied Specialties, and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at King Edward Medical University in Lahore, Pakistan. An internationally trained ophthalmologist, he completed postgraduate training in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with subspecialty fellowships in oculoplastic and orbital surgery, and vitreoretinal surgery. A leader in ophthalmic education, Prof. Moin chairs the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology’s Leadership Development Program and has trained nearly 80 ophthalmology leaders across the Asia-Pacific region. He is also a past President of the Ophthalmological Society of Pakistan (Lahore Branch) and former Editor-in-Chief of the Pakistan Journal of Ophthalmology.
